Exercise for Parkinson's: Transforming Lives

Exercise for Parkinson's: Transforming Lives

Do you know someone who has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's?

Receiving this news can feel overwhelming — for the person diagnosed and for those who love them. But there is genuine hope. Evidence shows that starting exercise as early as possible after diagnosis offers the greatest benefits, helping to slow symptom progression and maintain independence for longer.

Why exercise matters so much in Parkinson's

Parkinson's affects movement, balance, and coordination — but the good news is that the brain and body respond remarkably well to regular physical activity. Clinical guidance recommends that people with Parkinson's engage in regular exercise, and at times at a higher intensity, to improve movement, balance, strength, and overall quality of life.

Importantly, it is never too late to start. Exercising at any stage of life with Parkinson's can lead to meaningful improvements.

What you can do as a family member or carer

One of the most valuable things a family member or carer can do is encourage movement and promote activity. We understand this can feel difficult — people with Parkinson's may become very tired, seem unsteady on their feet, move more slowly, or struggle with everyday tasks.

It is natural to want to step in and help, but gently encouraging your loved one to exercise and work hard is one of the most effective ways to support their independence and help them take control of their symptoms. A physiotherapist can guide both of you on safe, appropriate activity and give carers practical strategies to use at home.

How Home Links Physiotherapy can help

At Home Links Physiotherapy, we have seen incredible transformations in our clients living with Parkinson's:

  • Clients moving from walking aids to walking unaided.

  • People regaining the confidence and freedom to access their communities.

  • Pain and stiffness replaced with strength, balance, and improved mobility — some even becoming fitter than before their diagnosis.

Our home-visiting one-to-one physiotherapy sessions are tailored to your specific needs, taking into account how Parkinson's affects your daily life. We carry out a comprehensive assessment and develop a personalised treatment and exercise plan aimed at improving movement and overall wellbeing, and slowing the progression of symptoms.

We work alongside our clients throughout their journey with Parkinson's, adapting activities as needs change over time.

FitMove: our specialist Parkinson's class

In addition to our one-to-one sessions, we deliver a dedicated Parkinson's class through FitMove — our accessible group physiotherapy programme.

Our Neuroflex and PD classes are designed specifically for people living with neurological conditions including Parkinson's, offering a supportive, social environment to build strength, balance, and mobility alongside others who understand the journey.

We are also proud to partner with Parkinson's UK Bromley branch to deliver the PD Champions Class, running twice a month in Bickley, Bromley, Kent.
